We're so pleased to welcome comic book artist Edward Ross to the bookshop for a graphic novel masterclass. We thoroughly enjoyed Edward's drop-in event with children that we're hosting a graphic novel workshop specifically for adults now!
Whether you've already tried your hand at creating a graphic novel or are seeking more guidance on where start, Edward Ross is an excellent teacher and artist to get you pointed in the right direction.
Feel free to your preferred drawing materials but pencils and pens will be provided!
You'll receive a bespoke Portobello Bookshop Masterclasses notebook for sketching and trying out ideas, as well as a 10% discount on Edward's books during the evening of the masterclass.
Edward Ross is an Edinburgh-based comic creator who has been stapling together bits of paper and drawing in them since childhood. His books Filmish: A Graphic Journey Through Film and Gamish: A Graphic History of Gaming explore the history and ideas behind his two favourite media. His new book Graphic Novel Builder aims to get more people making comics by offering a fun and approachable introduction to this amazing artform.

Edward Ross Author
Edward Ross is a comic book artist, writer and illustrator. Working alongside Dr James Hall, he has created many science-themed comics for universities, museums, charities and research bodies. Ross is a Film Studies graduate and regularly leads workshops in comic book creation. He lives in Edinburgh.

Wheelchair Access
We have a ramp at the front of the shop which has a ratio of 1:10 and loading capacity of 300kg, and so should be able to be used by most wheelchair users or those with mobility vehicles. The front doors are fully automated. Our shop interior is designed to allow access throughout for wheelchair users and prams, though please note there is only 700mm wide clearance to access the staff toilet.
Sound
We use a PA system to enhance the audio at our live events. We also have a hearing loop system installed, if you’d like to use our loop system during an event please let us know and we’ll make sure we have it set up and connected to the live audio feed during the event. If you wish to attend an event and require BSL interpretation, please give us a few weeks notice and we’ll do our best to arrange an interpreter.
