Chris Brookmyre – The Cracked Mirror at The Portobello Bookshop

We're so happy to welcome Chris Brookmyre back to the bookshop to celebrate the launch of his latest thriller, The Cracked Mirror. A cross-genre hybrid of Agatha Christie and Michael Connelly, The Cracked Mirror is set to be one of the most entertaining crime novels of the year. Brookmyre will be in conversation with his wife and writing partner (the other half of Ambrose Parry) Dr Marisa Haetzman.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience. There will be a signing after the event.

Vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of The Cracked Mirror – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book.

About The Cracked Mirror:

You know Penny Coyne. The little old lady who has solved multiple murders in her otherwise sleepy village, despite bumbling local police. A razor-sharp mind in a Sunday best hat.

You know Johnny Hawke. Hard-bitten LAPD homicide detective. Always in trouble with his captain, always losing partners, but always battling for the truth, whatever it takes.

Against all the odds, against the usual story, their worlds are about to collide. It starts with a dead writer and a mysterious wedding invitation. It will end with a rabbit hole that goes so deep, Johnny and Penny might just come to question not just whodunnit, but whether they want to know the answer.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.

Chris Brookmyre Author

It's over 25 years since multi-award-winning Sunday Times bestseller Chris Brookmyre’s first book, Quite Ugly One Morning, was published. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most popular crime writers in the UK. His enthusiasm for hurling himself into ex-curricular activities such as the Scotland v England Writers football, the Caledonian Challenge, Channel 5 Egg Heads, the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers (including appearances at Glastonbury), BBC Question Time and a live celebrity Mastermind with Clive Myrie (specialist subject Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is well known and means he has more to talk about than most. In a previous life Chris worked for Screen International which involved frequent trips to Los Angeles. A TV adaptation of The Cut, which also centres on the film industry, is in development with production company Highland Midge and Chris and his wife Marisa are currently writing the scripts. It was also recently longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year.

Marisa Haetzman Chair

Marisa Haetzman worked as a consultant anaesthetist, her career taking her to London, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow before stepping down to study for a Masters degree in the History of Medicine. Her dissertation research into the early use of chloroform led to her collaborating with Chris Brookmyre, under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry, to write crime fiction set in the world of Nineteenth Century Edinburgh medicine. The couple’s first three novels were all shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize, with A Corruption of Blood also shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger. Marisa Haetzman has also collaborated in adapting both the Ambrose Parry novels and Chris Brookmyre’s The Cut for television.
