Angie Spoto – The Bone Diver at The Portobello Bookshop

We're so pleased that Angie Spoto will be coming to the bookshop to celebrate the launch of her new novel, The Bone Diver. Angie was here in April 2023 for the launch of her debut, The Grief Nurse, so it's fantastic that she'll be joining us again for a conversation with Ann Landmann, founder and director of Cymera: Scotland's Festival of Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Writing.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience.

Vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of The Bone Diver – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book.

About The Bone Diver:

Kier Sealgair is the only daughter of a family of seal-hunters. Her brothers continue the family trade but the seal hunters and fishermen of the small town are struggling as catches decline and the seals are dying. Kier cannot kill and in hard times she is a burden to her family, especially now that her father is ailing. Her only friend is Fie, son of the town's tailor, living with the knowledge that his father hoped for a daughter.

Near the town, high on the cliffs, is Erskine Manor. Servants come from the manor to the town to buy supplies but the family is never seen and rumours abound about the family. Did the Lord kill the Lady? Are the five towers of the manor for the five daughters? Are the children of the manor even human, or are they taloned and spine-toothed monsters set to roam the overgrown walled grounds?

And then one day a woman arrives in Fie's shop wanting an impossibly expensive dress for one of her daughters. She can only be Lady Erskine. And later, on the rocky shore Kier meets the same woman who offers her bargain, one that could save Kier's father.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.

Angie Spoto Author

Angie Spoto is an American writer living in Scotland. She grew up near Chicago, lived in the Netherlands, and eventually moved to Scotland to get her PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow. She loves stories that are dark and surreal, strange and magical, and is inspired by writers like Ursula Le Guinn, Octavia Butler, Leonora Carrington, and Naomi Novik. She loves fairy tales, especially Scottish ones. She lives beside the shore with her husband and son.

Ann Landmann Chair

Growing up in East Germany on a steady diet of Grimms and Russian Fairy Tales until falling under the thrall of Tolkien and Pratchett in her teens, it is little surprising that Ann Landmann is now the founder and director of Cymera: Scotland's Festival of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Writing. Some might say it's a cunning ploy to feed her addiction to those genres. In her spare time she sells books for one of Scotland's publishers and moonlights at other people's book festivals.
