Ali Smith – Gliff at The Portobello Bookshop

Our booksellers are united in appreciation for Ali Smith and the generosity of her writing, so it's an honour to welcome her back to the bookshop for an event to celebrate the launch of her new novel, Gliff. It's the first of two new interconnected novels from the bestselling, Booker Prize-shortlisted author. Smith will be in conversation with literary professional Jess Orr.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as an on-the-night-only livestream for attendees watching from home. There will be a signing after the event.

Please note that the livestream will not be available to watch following the live broadcast.

In-person vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of Gliff – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book. Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be redeemed on the website against a single copy of Gliff.

About Gliff:

O brave new world, that has such people in't.

Once upon a time not very far from now, two children come home to find a line of wet red paint encircling the outside of their house.

What does it mean?

It’s a truism of our time that it’ll be the next generation who’ll sort out our increasingly toxic world.

What would that actually be like?

In a state turned hostile, a world of insiders and outsiders, what things of the past can sustain them and what shape can resistance take?

And what’s a horse got to do with any of this? Gliff is a novel about how we make meaning and how we are made meaningless. With a nod to the traditions of dystopian fiction, a glance at the Kafkaesque, and a new take of the notion of classic, it's a moving and electrifying read, a vital and prescient tale of the versatility and variety deep-rooted in language, in nature and in human nature.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
