A Swim with Freya Bromley at The Portobello Bookshop

Join us in Portobello for a swim and a reading with Freya Bromley, author of The Tidal Year. This memoir follows Freya as she swims in every tidal pool in mainland Britain in an effort to find healing amidst grief and uncertainty.

We'll be meeting at the bookshop at 10am before heading towards the beach where Freya will read from the book, and finally we'll be taking a dip in the North Sea. You could even grab a coffee from our next-door neighbours, Tanifiki, before or afterwards!

Please bring appropriate clothing and gear for both swimming in the sea and for warming up following the event, as well as something to sit on during Freya's reading.

Please note that The Tidal Year was published on 4th May. If you have signed up for a Book & In-Person option, and would like to receive your copy ahead of the event on 19th August, please get in touch via our contact form and we'll be happy to help.

About The Tidal Year:

The further Freya travels, the closer she finds herself to grief. The Tidal Year charts one woman’s journey of desires, losses and longing as she swims every tidal pool in mainland Britain after her brother’s death.

Back in London, Freya is adrift between two lovers. Despite the shimmering new futures these relationships present, she doubts the best route forward. The search for tidal pools is the only thing anchoring her.

The Tidal Year is both a compelling narrative about the healing power of wild swimming and the space it creates for reflection and hope, and an essential exploration of grief, female rage, love and sisterhood in the modern age.

If you take part in the event, please note that you do so at your own risk.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
