This event was hosted on Thursday 20th May.

REPLAY AVAILABLE HERE

We're excited to be joined by queen of crime Val McDermid and graphic novelist Kathryn Briggs for the publication day launch of Resistance: A Graphic Novel. A heart-racing thriller, Resistance imagines a nightmare pandemic that seems only too credible in the wake of COVID-19. Unlike its prescient subject matter, this is a book worth celebrating – join us for an engaging evening and a fascinating conversation between the two collaborators.

It’s the summer solstice weekend, and 150,000 people descend on a farm in the northeast of England for an open-air music festival. At first, a spot of rain seems to be the only thing dampening the fun – until a mystery bug appears. Before long, the illness is spreading at an electrifying speed and seems resistant to all antibiotics. Can journalist Zoe Meadows track the outbreak to its source, and will a cure be found before the disease becomes a pandemic?

Val McDermid has published twenty-seven crime novels, which have sold over seventeen million copies worldwide, been translated into forty languages and won multiple awards. Her series featuring criminal profiler Tony Hill was the basis for the TV series The Wire in the Blood for ITV.

Kathryn Briggs is an award winning graphic novelist and arts educator. She combines a background in fine art with a love of pop culture to create comics which range from slice of life to comparative mythology. After studying in Scotland, she moved back to the woods of Pennsylvania in 2018.

The collaborators will be in conversation with Peggy Hughes, Programme Director for the National Centre for Writing in Norwich. Val McDermid, Kathryn Briggs and Peggy Hughes will join us live from their homes on the night.

The signed book and ticket option includes a signed bookplate edition of Resistance: A Graphic Novel. These will be hand-wrapped and posted out in the days following the event. There is also a £3 ticket option, which includes a £3 voucher that can be redeemed against any item on The Portobello Bookshop website – including books by featured authors.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
