Jessica Elliott Dennison – Lazy Baking at The Portobello Bookshop

This event was hosted on Friday 1st October.

REPLAY AVAILABLE HERE

We're really looking forward to welcoming Jessica Elliott Dennison back to the bookshop for an evening event to celebrate her latest book, Lazy Baking. She'll tell us all about her modern guide to fuss-free sweet and savoury bakes – and there may even be the chance to taste some of them! Jessica will be in conversation with writer and critic, Caroline Eden.

The event will be streamed live from the bookshop to attendees viewing from home. We are also planning for this event to take place in the bookshop with a small in-person audience of up to 25 people (our usual capacity is 100). However, depending on COVID regulations at the time of the event, those purchasing the book & in-person audience option will also receive the link to watch the event from home, should we be unable to welcome people to the bookshop on the night.

When it comes to baking, Jessica Elliott Dennison's approach is minimal fuss, yet comforting and delicious. In Lazy Baking, she shares her tried and tested recipes for sweet and savoury bakes that can be enjoyed throughout the day.

From speedy breakfast flatbreads with eggs to zesty amaretti to enjoy with coffee, Jess's recipes require just a handful of ingredients, minimal kit, and little need for washing up. With Lazy Baking, you'll find easy rustic pastries for a satisfying mid-week lunch and 3-ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies for those moments when you just need a quick-fix treat. There are simple crispbreads to enjoy with a bottle of wine, effortless cakes you can rely on for last-minute celebrations, and stress-free desserts like a 1-Pan Flourless Chocolate Cake and an impressive yet easy Brown Sugar Pavlova to rustle up when friends come over.

With clever hacks and tips, plenty of ideas for adapting recipes to make them seasonally relevant, and substitutions to fit around what's sitting in your fridge or pantry, Lazy Baking is the perfect recipe book for anyone looking to whip up fresh and modern treats that are fool proof, rewarding, and guaranteed to impress.

Jessica Elliott Dennison is the founder of the much-loved Elliott’s on Sciennes Road in Edinburgh where she creates seasonal menus for the local neighbourhood, along with simple baking, good coffee and interesting drinks. Alongside running Elliott’s, Jess is a regular contributor to food and culture magazines, including Courier and Liz Earle Wellbeing. Her recipes have been featured in Vogue, The Telegraph, Monocle, Delicious, Homes and Interiors and Good Food. Lazy Baking is the third in a series published by Hardie Grant, following on from Salad Feasts and Tin Can Magic.

Caroline Eden is a writer and critic contributing to The Guardian, BBC and The Times Literary Supplement. Caroline’s books include Samarkand, Black Sea, and most recently, Red Sands, a ‘book of the year’ for the Financial Times, Sunday Times and The New Yorker.

When you purchase a signed – and if requested, dedicated – copy of Lazy Baking via the options below, you will also receive access to the livestream of the event. There is also an option to purchase a £3 voucher which provides access to the livestream. The voucher can be used on any item in the bookshop and on our website – including other books by Jessica Elliott Dennison. Following Scottish Government advice and guidelines, in-person audience attendees will be asked to wear a face covering inside the bookshop unless they are exempt.
