Elle McNicoll – Like A Curse at The Portobello Bookshop

We are over the moon to be welcoming Elle McNicoll back to the bookshop to launch her brand new book, Like A Curse. This is the much-anticipated follow-up to Like A Charm for which we hosted the launch last year and which was a favourite amongst our booksellers! This is a family-friendly event so everyone is welcome. Elle will be in conversation with Dr Melanie Ramdarshan Bold.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as a livestream for attendees watching from home. There will be a signing after the event.

In-person vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of Like A Curse – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book. Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be redeemed on the website against a single copy of Like A Curse.

About Like A Curse:

Stuck in Loch Ness while Edinburgh falls under the control of a terrifyingly powerful Siren, Ramya Knox is frustrated. She's supposed to be learning magic from her Aunt Opal, but that isn't going as smoothly as she'd hoped. As she pushes to rescue her Hidden Folk friends in the city, long-buried secrets come to light and legends come to life.

Ramya knows she's different; she knows she's a witch. But now she must learn the true meaning of her powers... before all she loves is lost.

Elle McNicoll is a bestselling, multi-award-winning Scottish children’s author. Her debut novel, A Kind of Spark, won the Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children's Book Prize. The TV adaptation will be released by BBC Children’s in Spring 2023. She is an advocate for better representation of neurodiversity in publishing and in 2022 founded The Adrien Prize, to recognise children’s fiction that explores the disability experience. She currently lives in London.

Dr Melanie Ramdarshan Bold is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, where she teaches and researches children's and YA literature and book culture. Her research focus is the representation of socially marginalised groups (particularly people of colour) in, and the experiences of authors and readers from socially marginalised groups of children's and YA books. Melanie has published widely on the topic; alongside numerous publications about contemporary book culture.
