Chris Brookmyre – The Cliff House at The Portobello Bookshop

Join us on Tuesday 26th July for the Edinburgh launch of Chris Brookmyre's brand new thriller, The Cliff House. We're delighted to be welcoming Chris back for what's set to be an excellent conversation with fellow Fun Lovin' Crime Writer, Doug Johnstone.

We are planning for this event to take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as a livestream for attendees watching from home.

Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be used on the website against the price of The Cliff House. In-person vouchers can be used on the night of the event against anything in the bookshop – we will have a list of attendee vouchers at the ready.

About The Cliff House:

One hen weekend, seven secrets... but only one worth killing for. Jen's hen party is going to be out of control... She's rented a luxury getaway on its own private island. The helicopter won't be back for seventy-two hours. They are alone. They think. As well as Jen, there's the pop diva and the estranged ex-bandmate, the tennis pro and the fashion guru, the embittered ex-sister-in-law and the mouthy future sister-in-law.

It's a combustible cocktail, one that takes little time to ignite, and in the midst of the drunken chaos, one of them disappears. Then a message tells them that unless someone confesses her terrible secret to the others, their missing friend will be killed.

Problem is, everybody has a secret. And nobody wants to tell.

It is 25 years since multi-award-winning Sunday Times bestseller Chris Brookmyre’s first book was published. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most popular crime writers in Scotland. His enthusiasm for hurling himself into extra-curricular activities such as the Scotland v England Writers football, the Caledonian Challenge, Channel 5 Egg Heads, the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers and most recently BBC Question Time is well known and means he has more to talk about than most. At Bloody Scotland last year, he earned bragging rights when Stephen King opened his event by holding up a copy of Chris Brookmyre’s book, Want You Gone declaring it ‘fantastic’. A TV adaptation of The Cut is in development with Glasgow-based production company Highland Midge and Chris and his wife Marisa are currently writing the scripts.

Doug Johnstone is the author of twelve novels, most recently The Great Silence. He has been shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Book of the Year three times, and the Capital Crime Best Independent Voice one; The Big Chill was longlisted for Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year. He’s taught creative writing and been writer in residence at various institutions, and has been an arts journalist for twenty years. Doug is a songwriter and musician with five albums and three EPs released, and he plays drums for the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers. He’s also player-manager of the Scotland Writers Football Club. He lives in Edinburgh.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
