An Evening with Leone Ross at The Portobello Bookshop

For this special online book group event, we will be joined by author Leone Ross for a discussion of This One Sky Day.

Following a cast of compelling characters, This One Sky Day is a magical realist novel which casts a dreamy spell. A sensual meditation on the nature of love and addiction, this dazzling and incisive novel satirises postcolonial society and celebrates oddness.

Dawn breaks across the archipelago of Popisho. The world is stirring awake again, each resident with their own list of things to do: a wedding feast to conjure and cook; an infidelity to investigate; a lost soul to set free. As the sun rises, two star-crossed lovers try to find their way back to one another across this single day. When night falls, all have been given a gift, and many are no longer the same. The sky is pink, and some wonder if it will ever be blue again.

Leone Ross was born in England and grew up in Jamaica. Her first novel, All the Blood is Red, was longlisted for the Orange Prize, and her second novel, Orange Laughter, was chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Women's Hour Watershed Fiction favourite. Her short fiction has been widely anthologised and her first short story collection, Come Let Us Sing Anyway, was nominated for several prizes, including the Jhalak Prize. She is the editor of the first black British anthology of speculative fiction, due out in 2022 with Peepal Tree Press.

The event will take place over Zoom, and will give attendees a chance to discuss the book and ask the author questions. The ticket price includes a signed bookplate edition of This One Sky Day which will be sent out as soon as possible. There is also a ticket option that includes a £3 voucher that can be redeemed against any item (including This One Sky Day) from our website. Limited places are available.

Please note this is a special event book group, and that our regular (and free) book group, which began shortly before lockdown, will resume in future.

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
