Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930) was an active Communist from the start. At 16 he spent a year in prison. His poems and performances were astonishing and popular. He had lasting influence on art, cinema and drama. He committed suicide before he turned 40.Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) is the great Scottish poet of the second half of the twentieth century. He was a major essayist, artist and a translator from most of the languages of Europe which he knew first-hand, and from further afield.
