Veena Das is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at The Johns Hopkins University, US. Her research interests include feminist movements, gender studies, sectarian violence, medical anthropology, post-Colonial and post-Structural theory in the context of South Asia. She is currently working on questions of violence, social suffering and subjectivity and is involved in a project on disease and health seeking behavior among the urban poor in Delhi. Her major publications include Violence and Subjectivity (2000, co-edited), Critical Events: An Anthropological Perspective on Contemporary India (2000), The Oxford India Guide Companion to Sociology and Social Anthropology (2001), Handbook of Indian Sociology (2004), Anthropology in the Margins of the State (2004, co-edited) and Life and Words: Violence and the Descent into the Ordinary (2006).
