Tanya Smith was born in the North Side of Minneapolis. She created a complicated wire fraud scheme and avoided the law for years before eventually being caught. Smith was given a 24-year sentence which was then the longest sentence given to a white-collar criminal. She escaped prison twice and only served 13 years of her sentence before securing her own release on legal grounds. Smith has since taken responsibility for her past and started to rebuild her life. Her story is currently being developed for Netflix by Issa Rae.
