Shi Tiesheng (1951-2010) was one of the most prominent Chinese writers of the second half of the 20th century. After an injury to his spine in 1971 left him paralysed from the waist down he wrote as a way to process his grief and explore the world. His variety of novels, essays, scripts, and poetry includes the masterful essay The Temple of Earth and I, which is taught throughout schools in China. Alex Woodend’s fascination with Spanish and Chinese began at Franklin & Marshall College. He went on to study Chinese literature and history at Columbia University where his master’s thesis explored early post-Mao literature. He has since translated several books into English and is at work on new translations and original writing.
