A career diplomat for 37 years, Roger Beetham was Geoffrey Rippon's Spokesman during the successful negotiations for Britain's entry into the European Communities in 1970-72, and later Roy Jenkins' Spokesman at the European Commission in Brussels during the latter's Presidency (1977-81). Roger Beetham also served in Washington, Helsinki and Delhi. He represented the FCO on the Anglo-French Commission on the Channel Tunnel from 1986-90 and on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (1988-90). He was British Ambassador to Senegal (and four other West African countries) from 1990, and ended his diplomatic career as Ambassador and UK Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (1993-97).
