Peter Kemmis Betty joined the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkha Rifles in 1939, fighting in a gruelling campaign against the Japanese in Malaya, where his bravery was rewarded with the Military Cross. He spent three and a half years as a prisoner of the Japanese in Singapore before returning to active military service after the war. He died shortly before his 100th birthday in 2016.
