As a child and teenager, Oscar Fovarge attended eight schools in three countries. He learned German in Germany from football-playing friends and the basics of rugby from a fierce Scottish schoolmistress at a Kenyan primary school. Returning to life in England was far less exciting, until he encountered two inspiring teachers at his last school. One proved to his charges that they could win rugby matches against fully grown adults by employing brains over brawn. The other encouraged an enquiring mind, especially a love of languages, literature, history and ideas.
