May Hooper was born in Glasgow in 1951 and lives in this city to this day with her partner Robert Salmon, who assisted Alasdair Gray in his mural painting work. When young she trained and practised as a nurse, but then in later life she moved on to social work finally teaching social work practice both at Glasgow Caledonian University and at the University of Strathclyde. She has retired from these positions now and, as well as writing, May paints and draws.
