Luigi Piccioni is Lecturer in Economic History at the University of Calabria, Italy. He graduated from “La Sapienza” University of Rome and received his PhD in Humanities from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. His research interests are mainly focused in the history of European protected areas, of the relationships between nationalism and landscape protection, and of environmentalist cultures of the second half of twentieth century. His publications include the book Il volto amato della patria. Sul primo movimento italiano per la tutela della natura 1883–1934 (Camerino 1999) and the essay “La natura come posta in gioco. La dialettica tutela ambientale-sviluppo turistico nella storia della ‘regione dei parchi’”, part of the volume on Abruzzo of Storia d’Italia Einaudi (Turin 2000). He is member of the Editorial Board of the series Le aree naturali protette (ETS, Pisa).
