Louis A. Perez Jr. is J. Carlyle Sitterson Professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is the author of many books, including Cuba: Between Reform and Revolution, The War of 1898: The United States and Cuba in History and Historiography, and On Becoming Cuban: Identity, Nationality, and Culture.
