In 1879, Kenneth Grahame entered the Bank of England as a clerk, and soon began writing as a form of escapism. In 1907, Rudyard Kipling was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize and in 1926 he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Literature. Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850. He studied engineering and then law, before finally becoming a writer. In 1986, Robert Ingpen was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature and has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.
