Jyotiprasad Chatterjee is presently Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. His research interest includes social movements, sociology of ethnicity, the processes of ethnic identity construction and assertion, the dialectics of democracy and development. Under the scope of doctoral research, his endeavour has been to underscore the sociological dynamics of Jharkhand Movement in India. As a member of the Lokniti–CSDS network from West Bengal, he has been regularly taking part in different national level scholarly debates and discussions regarding the evolving nature of political processes in India with particular reference to West Bengal. He has co-authored a book and has published a number of articles in scholarly journals, edited volumes and newspapers in the fields of social movements, social development, electoral behaviour, ethnic movements, sociology of gender, motherhood, etc. As a member of the team of Sociology of MHRD, Government of India project ‘e-PG Pathshala’, he has written two e-modules in the paper on social movements. Suprio Basu is Assistant Course Director, Rural Awareness and Self Employment, Department of Sociology, University of Kalyani, West Bengal. He has been Lokniti–CSDS’s coordinator of the state of West Bengal since 2006. His areas of specialization are rural sociology, women’s empowerment, Self Help Group (SHG), study of democracy and decentralization. As a part of his interest in rural sociology and rural social transformation, he is actively involved with various governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the field. Beside co-authoring a book, he has also published several articles in prominent journals, edited volumes and newspapers
