John C Kirchgessner Author

John C. Kirchgessner, PhD, RN, PNP, is Associate Professor, St. John Fisher College School of Nursing, Rochester, NY, USA. He is a prominent nurse historian whose research and scholarship focus on the history of American health care and nursing, particularly the work of nurses who provided care to West Virginia coal miners and their families. He was Director of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, where he was recognized for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education. Dr. Kirchgessner is also an experienced author, notably as co-author of The Voice of Professional Nursing Education: A 40-Year History of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. He has also authored numerous clinical and historical journal articles, and contributed to a number of texts. Dr. Kirchgessner's research has been presented at international and national research meetings.

Arlene W. Keeling, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Centennial Distinguished Professor of Nursing, University of Virginia, USA; Director, The Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Historical Inquiry, University of Virginia; and Chair of the Acute and Specialty Care Department. She has served as President of the American Association for the History of Nursing and is currently Co-Chair of the Expert Panel on Nursing History of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Keeling has received a variety of awards, including an AJN Book of the Year Award for Rooted in the Mountains (2012), and a Post-Doc Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Study of the History of Nursing. She also received the 2012 Mary Roberts Book Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing, for Nurses on the Front Lines (2010, Springer Publishing). Her writing has been published in dozens of journals articles, and she has co-authored and contributed to numerous clinical and historical texts.
