Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) was the towering figure of German Romantic-ism, and, by common consent, German Literature's greatest writer, lauded for his poetry, novels, dramas, essays, and scientific experiments. Faust was his signature work and recog-nized at the time of publication as being one of the great occasions in German literary history.
