Ian Hughes specializes in Late Roman history and is the author of Belisarius, The Last Roman General (2008), Stilicho, the Vandal Who Saved Rome (2010); Aetius: Atilla's Nemesis (2012); Patricians and Emperors: The Last Rules of the Western Roman Empire (2015); Attila: Arch-Enemy of Rome (2019); A Military Life of Constantine the Great (2020) and Constantius III: Rome's Last Hope (2021). A former teacher whose hobbies include football, wargaming and restoring electric guitars, he lives near Barnsley in South Yorkshire.
