Fernando Moreira da Silva Editor

Fernando Moreira da Silva is a researcher at CIAUD – Research Centre in Architecture, Urbanism and Design, being also its President (Portugal), honorary researcher at Surface – Inclusive Design Research Centre, University of Salford (UK), full professor in design at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (FA/ULisboa), Portugal, with specialization in Visual Communication Design, Inclusive Design and Color. He is a Member of the General Council of the University of Lisbon, President of the Scientific Board and coordinator of the PhD in Design of the FA/ULisboa. For the last years he has performed as panel coordinator for doctoral and postdoctoral grants in Design, Architecture and Urbanism at FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology of Portugal, International consultant of CNPq - National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (Brazil) and co-coordinator of the International PhD Degree in Design and Innovation, University of Naples (Italy). Invited professor at several foreign universities in Brazil, Italy, Spain and Hong Kong, he has supervised to more than 70 master dissertations and 50 PhD theses, being a member of the Scientific Committees of several international scientific journals.

Helena Bártolo is Coordinator Professor at the School of Technology and Management, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal. Helena Bártolo is a collaborator professor of CIAUD, a Research Centre of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (Portugal), and was a founding member of the IPL Research Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP). She was Director of the School of Technology, Polytechnic of Cavado and Ave in Barcelos, Portugal. Helena Bártolo participated in numerous national and international projects funded by the European Commission, the Portuguese Agency for Innovation, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Portuguese Institute for SMEs and Innovation and industrial companies. She organized several International events, namely the International Conference on Sustainable Intelligent Manufacturing (SIM 2011, 2013), of which she was Chair, the International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP2009, 2011, 2013), as well symposiums and workshops. Helena Bártolo is author and co-author of more than 70 scientific papers published in Journals, book chapters and conference proceedings and has served as referee of several International Journals.

Paulo Bártolo is Chair Professor on Advanced Manufacturing at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE), University of Manchester (UK), Head of the Manufacturing Group, Head of the Innovative Manufacturing Research Theme, Director of the Manchester Biomanufacturing Centre, member of the Senior Leadership Team Committee and the Management Board of the EPSRC & MRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Regenerative Medicine, Principal Investigator of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, and Faculty of Science and Engineering Peer Review College. He is Champion of the Biomedical Devices and Systems core area at the Sir Henry Royce Institute (SHRI) for Advanced Materials a major UK initiative, and member of SHRI Scientific Committee. He is Visiting Professor at Nanyang University (Singapore), and a Collaborator Professor of the Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico) and CIAUD, a FCT Research Centre of Excellence of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (Portugal). He is a Fellow of CIRP (The International Academy of Production Engineering) and Chairman of the CIRP Scientific Technical Committee on Electro-Physical and Chemical Processes (STC E). He has authored more than 500 publications in journal papers, book chapters and conference proceedings, co-edited 18 books (most of them published by Springer, Wiley and Taylor&Francis) and holds 13 patents. Paulo Bártolo is the Editor-in-Chief of the Virtual and Physical Prototyping Journal published by Taylor & Francis and the Biomanufacturing Reviews published by Springer, being an Editorial Board member of several other international journals.

Rita Almendra is a designer and an associate Professor with at the Department of Design, Faculty of Architecture ULisbon. She is the coordinator of CIAUD’s Design group. She has an MBA in management with a marketing specialization from the FCEE at Catholic University of Lisbon. Her Master in Design Management was supervised by Prof. Charles Waldman from INSEAD. Her PhD, supervised by Prof. Moreira da Silva – Faculty of Architectura, University of Lisbon, Prof. Henri Christiaans – TU Delft and Prof. Pinto Duarte – MIT/ Faculty of Architectura, University of Lisbon, was related with Decision making in the Conceptual Phase of Design Process. She lectures at the Under graduation, Master and PhD Programs several courses in the areas of Theory and Critics, Design Studio, Sustainable Design and Design Management. Her research interests are the ones of Design Cognition, Design Research, Design Education, Design Management, Sustainability and Inclusive Design.

Filipa Roseta, architect, author and co-editor in the fields of Architecture and Urban design, focusing on modernity, sustainability, and the changing role of the Academy. Currently, Auxiliary Professor of Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon and researcher at CIAUD (Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design). Previous academic experience includes: PhD at the Royal College of Art (2009) with the thesis "The Modern Avenue", supported by Gulbenkian Foundation research grant; MPhil in Contemporary Architectural Culture at FAUTL (2001); Diploma in Architecture at FAUTL (1996). Previous architectural experience includes the co-founding of Roseta Vaz Monteiro Arquitectos (2001), where she co-authored several architectural projects with Francisco Vaz Monteiro, including the Boa Nova Church and Community Centre, a built project published worldwide.

Henrique Almeida is a Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the School for Technology and Management from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. Graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the School for Technology and Management. Has a Master Degree of Science in Engineering Design from the Superior Institute of Technology of the Technical University of Lisbon. Has a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Aveiro. Member of the organising committees of the following conferences: International Conference on Tissue Engineering an ECCOMAS Thematic Conference (ICTE), International Conference on Sustainable Smart Manufacturing (S2M), International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP), International Conference on Sustainable Intelligent Manufacturing (SIM), and the 6th Portuguese National Congress of Biomechanics. Participates and participated in several research projects funded by the following agencies: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Ciencia Y Tecnologia Para El Desarrollo (CYTED), Portuguese Agency of Inovation (ADI), PRODER, IAPMEI, British Council, European Commission Projects and the People Marie Curie Actions Program of the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme of the European Commission. Member of the Editorial Board and Review Editorial Board of several journals from Springer, Emerald, and Frontiers.

Ana Cristina Lemos is Coordinator Professor at the School of Construction Management and Engineering, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL), Portugal. Her main field of research is numerical analysis. Other professional and research interests include optimization methods, the use of technology in mathematics and engineering education and e-learning education. She has served at the IPL School of Technology and Management in several administrative positions: Vice-Director, President of the Pedagogical Board, Head of the Mathematics Department and Director of the School Learning Resources Centre and she is currently a member of the Scientific Board. She was a member of the local organizing committee of several International events, namely the International Conference on Sustainable Intelligent Manufacturing (SIM 2011, 2013) and the International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP2009, 2011, 2013). She has supervised several postgraduate students.
