Evgeny Bunimovich (1954) made his debut as a poet in Russia in 1990. In his poetry, Bunimovich observes his everyday surroundings in a mathematical fashion in order to arrive at reflections on himself and on Russia. Bunimovich began his career as a teacher and mathematician. In 1981, he became president of the Club of Independent Poets, which was shut down on the orders of the Communist Party. He took up a seat in the Moscow city parliament for the Western-oriented opposition party Yabloko ('The Apple') and is also the organiser of the International Festival of Poets in Moscow. In recent years, his work has been translated into French, Dutch, Swedish, German, English and Arabic.
