David J. Rothman is Bernard Schoenberg Professor of Social Medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Society and Medicine at Columbia University. His books include Strangers at the Bedside: A History of How Law and Bioethics Transformed Medical Decision Making, Beginnings Count: The Technological Imperative in American Health Care, and with Sheila M. Rothman, The Pursuit of Perfection: The Promise and Perils of Medical Enhancement. Sheila M. Rothman is professor of public health in the Division of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University.
