He is author of Fighting Their Own Battles: Mexican Americans, African Americans, and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Texas and, with Gregory Smithers, Racism in American Popular Media: From Aunt Jemima to the Frito Bandito.

Gregory D. Smithers, Richmond, Virginia, is associate professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is author of several books, including Slave Breeding: Sex, Violence, and Memory in African American History and The Cherokee Diaspora: An Indigenous History of Migration, Resettlement, and Identity.

Simon Wendt, Frankfurt, Germany, is assistant professor of American studies at the University of Frankfurt. He is author of The Spirit and the Shotgun: Armed Resistance and the Struggle for Civil Rights and coeditor of several books, including Globalizing Lynching History: Vigilantism and Extralegal Punishment from an International Perspective.
