Bert Waits Author

FranklinD. Demana FrankDemana received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Michigan StateUniversity. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at The OhioState University. As an active supporter of the use of technology to teach andlearn mathematics, he is cofounder of the international Teachers Teaching withTechnology (T3) professional development program. He has been the director orcodirector of more than $10 million of National Science Foundation (NSF) andfoundational grant activities, including a $3 million grant from the U.S.Department of Education Mathematics and Science Educational Research programawarded to The Ohio State University. Along with frequent presentations atprofessional meetings, he has published a variety of articles in the areas of computer-and calculator-enhanced mathematics instruction. Dr. Demana is also cofounder (withBert Waits) of the annual International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics(ICTCM). He is co-recipient of the 1997 Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Awardpresented by the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, co-recipientof the 1998 Christofferson-Fawcett Mathematics Education Award presented by theOhio Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and recipient of the 2015 NationalCouncil of Teachers ofMathematics (NCTM) Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr.Demana coauthored Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic; EssentialAlgebra: A Calculator Approach; Transition to College Mathematics; CollegeAlgebra and Trigonometry: A Graphing Approach; College Algebra: A GraphingApproach; Precalculus: Functions and Graphs; and Intermediate Algebra: AGraphing Approach.   BertK. Waits BertWaits received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University and was Professor Emeritusof Mathematics there. Dr. Waits was cofounder of the international Teachers Teachingwith Technology (T3) professional development program, and was codirector orprincipal investigator on several large National Science Foundation projects.Dr. Waits published articles in more than 70 nationally recognized professionaljournals. He frequently gave invited lectures, workshops, and mini courses atnational meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the NationalCouncil of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) on how to use computer technology toenhance the teaching and learning of mathematics. Dr. Waits was co-recipient ofthe 1997 Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award presented by the NationalCouncil of Supervisors of Mathematics, and was the cofounder (with Frank Demana)of the ICTCM. Foley GregFoley received B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics educationfrom The University of Texas at Austin. He is the Robert L. Morton Professor ofMathematics Education at Ohio University. Dr. Foley has taught elementaryarithmetic through graduate-level mathematics, as well as upper-division andgraduate-level mathematics education classes. He has held full-time facultypositions at North Harris County College, Austin Community College, The OhioState University, Sam Houston State University, and Appalachian StateUniversity, and served as Director of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy andas Senior Scientist for Secondary School Mathematics Improvement for the AustinIndependent School District in Austin, Texas. Dr. Foley has presented over 400lectures, workshops, and institutes throughout the United States and, internationally,has directed or codirected more than 60 funded projects totaling over $5million. He has published over 50 book chapters and journal articles. In 1998,he received the biennial American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges(AMATYC) Award for Mathematics Excellence; in 2005, the annual Teachers Teachingwith Technology (T3) Leadership Award; in 2013, Ohio University’s PattonCollege award for distinguished graduate teaching; and in 2015, the OhioCouncil of Teachers of Mathematics Kenneth Cummins Award for exemplarymathematics teaching at the university level.  Dr.Foley coauthored Precalculus: A Graphing Approach; Precalculus: Functionsand Graphs; and Advanced Quantitative Reasoning: Mathematics for the WorldAround Us.  DanielKennedy DanKennedy received his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross andhis master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill. Since 1973 he has taught mathematics at the BaylorSchool in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he holds the Cartter Lupton DistinguishedProfessorship. Dr. Kennedy joined the Advanced Placement Calculus Test DevelopmentCommittee in 1986, then in 1990 became the first high school teacher in 35years to chair that committee. It was during his tenure as chair that theprogram moved to require graphing calculators and laid the early groundwork forthe 1998 reform of the Advanced Placement Calculus curriculum. The author of the1997 Teacher’s Guide—AP Calculus, Dr. Kennedy has conducted more than 50workshops and institutes for high school calculus teachers. His articles onmathematics teaching have appeared in the Mathematics Teacher and the AmericanMathematical Monthly, and he is a frequent speaker on education reform atprofessional and civic meetings. Dr. Kennedy was named a Tandy TechnologyScholar in 1992 and a Presidential Award winner in 1995.  Dr.Kennedy coauthored Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic; Prentice Hall AlgebraI; Prentice Hall Geometry; and Prentice Hall Algebra 2.  DavidE. Bock DaveBock holds degrees from the University at Albany (NY) in mathematics (B.A.) andstatistics/education (M.S.). Mr. Bock taught mathematics at Ithaca High Schoolfor 35 years, including both BC Calculus and AP Statistics. He also taughtStatistics at Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College, and CornellUniversity, where he recently served as K–12 Education and Outreach Coordinatorand Senior Lecturer for the Mathematics Department. Mr. Bock serves as aStatistics consultant to the College Board, leading numerous workshops, andinstitutes for AP Statistics teachers. He has been a reader for the AP Calculusexam and both a reader and a table leader for the AP Statistics exam. Duringhis career Mr. Bock won numerous teaching awards, including the MAA’s Edyth MaySliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching (twice) andCornell University’s Outstanding Educator Award (three times), and was also afinalist for New York State Teacher of the Year.  Mr.Bock coauthored the AP Statistics textbook Stats: Modeling the World, thenon-AP text Stats in Your World, Barron’s AP Calculus review book, and Barron’sAP Calculus Flash Cards.
