Dr Ann Vernon, Ph.D., NCC, LMHC, is professor emerita, University of Northern Iowa, USA where she served as coordinator of the School and Mental Health Counseling programs. Dr. Vernon has published numerous books and has authored more than 30 book chapters dealing primarily with counseling children and adolescents, developmental counseling, and applications of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) with children and adolescents. In addition to her teaching and writing, Dr. Vernon presents workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and numerous other countries.
Kathryn L. Barry, MAE, worked as a professional school counselor for 17 years. She recently retired from Aplington-Parkersburg Schools in Aplington, Iowa, USA. Ms. Barry received both her MAE in school counseling and her BA in music education from the University of Northern Iowa. She has received advanced training in Adlerian play therapy, as well as trauma training from the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children and training in the Heartland Autism Model.
Ms. Barry serves on the Iowa School Counselor Association Board and is a member of the Iowa Department of Education’s School Counseling Transformation Design Work Team. In 2004, she received the State of Iowa Governor’s Award for outstanding service to Iowa’s children, and she was awarded the Iowa School Counselor Association’s Counselor of the Year award in 2010. Currently, Ms. Barry is an adjunct instructor at the University of Northern Iowa and a frequent presenter on using the creative arts in counseling and dealing with trauma in schools.
