Alan Steele joined the British Army in 1998 and served for 21 years, deploying on operations to Northern Ireland, the Balkans and Afghanistan. His first degree was in Ancient History and ever since discovering Xenophon, who wrote the earliest extant Western texts on horsemanship and the command of cavalry, he has been fascinated by cavalry warfare. Raffaele Ruggeri has long been interested in military history and has illustrated a number of books for Osprey.
