This final volume of the series explores the significant discoveries and conservation efforts in noblemen’s tombs from the Kushite Period, Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis.
The third volume in the series dedicated to the excavations of noblemen’s tombs from the Kushite Period, Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis offers an in-depth look at the ongoing efforts of the Egyptian–American South Asasif Conservation Project. Directed by Elena Pischikova and supported by the Ministry of Antiquities, this project aims to restore and reconstruct significant early Kushite tombs, including those of Karabasken (TT 391) and Karakhamun (TT 223). The volume highlights conservation work and new discoveries made between 2015 and 2018.
Among the notable findings discussed in Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis are the burial chamber of Karabasken, its monumental granite sarcophagus, and the Twenty-sixth Dynasty chapel associated with Padibastet located within the tomb of Karabasken. The volume also delves into various artifacts unearthed during the excavations, such as canopic jars, stelae, pottery, and animal bones, providing a comprehensive overview of the material culture from this period.
Additionally, ongoing art historical research is presented, particularly focusing on the intricate decorations within the tomb of Karakhamun, which features a uniquely preserved twenty-one-square grid. This final volume also introduces fresh insights into the name and titles of Irtieru, enriching the understanding of the social and cultural contexts of the time.
