In the light of international concerns over the harmful effects of tobacco smoking, the FAO has undertaken a project involving a number of studies which examine various aspects of the global tobacco economy. This is the second study in the series and focuses on the potential effects of reduced global demand on the economic conditions, earnings and food security of farming communities in developing countries dependent on tobacco production. It contains case studies of the tobacco economy in Brazil, China, India, Malawi, Turkey, and Zimbabwe, as well as a literature review of key issues including tobacco supply and demand, cigarette advertising and promotion, taxation, and the social costs of smoking.
