Reviviscence cover

This artistic photographic book illustrates the reconstruction of the Polcevera Viaduct, offering a poignant look at resilience and renewal in Genoa.

In Reviviscence, the journey of the Polcevera Viaduct, famously known as Ponte Morandi, is captured through the lens of photographer Andrea Botto. This artistic photographic book delves into the tragic events surrounding the viaduct's collapse in 2018 and the subsequent reconstruction efforts. Botto's work not only documents the demolition of the old structure but also the meticulous construction of a new bridge designed by the acclaimed architect Renzo Piano. His photographs serve as a visual narrative that chronicles each phase of this monumental undertaking.

The book showcases Botto's unique ability to blend documentary photography with an artistic approach. His technical expertise and keen eye for composition result in stunning images that highlight the complex processes involved in both demolition and construction. Through his lens, readers can appreciate the intricate details and the emotional weight of the project, which aims to restore a vital piece of infrastructure to the city of Genoa.

Reviviscence is more than just a collection of photographs; it is a reflection on resilience and renewal. As the new bridge rises, it symbolizes hope and progress for the community. With RINA Consulting overseeing the project management and safety coordination, the book encapsulates a pivotal moment in Genoa's history, celebrating the rebirth of a landmark that will stand as a testament to the city's enduring spirit.

"Botto's photos are a wide assortment, from panoramic views down to minute details, some of them a bit poetic or strange: red marks on concrete made by a pile of rusty nails; a half-eaten sandwich next to some construction equipment; a tarp sitting in a pile on a concrete slab. Most of the photos fit somewhere between these poles, revealing how the bridge was erected into its final form over the course of many 24-hour days, all somehow in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most powerful images, near the end, is the "garden of memory," where 43 trees are arranged in a circle near the point of the collapse. It is a reminder of how the people of Genoa, especially those involved on this project, will never forget August 14, 2018." —ARCHIDOSE
