This collaborative work features prose poems and watercolors created during the pandemic. It explores themes of quarantine through personal memories and abstract imagery, presented in both English and Spanish.
Pangolin is a collaborative work that intertwines prose poems and watercolors, born from the unique circumstances of the pandemic lockdown. Shortly after the onset of the Covid-19 restrictions, Iranian artist Iran do Espírito Santo reached out to Enrique Juncosa in Mallorca, proposing a partnership to create a book. This collaboration blossomed into a dialogue between visual and written art, capturing the essence of confinement and introspection.
Enrique Juncosa had begun crafting a series of prose poems inspired by his travels, personal memories, and imagination. These poems reflect a lifestyle that abruptly came to a halt due to the pandemic. He composed 40 prose pieces that encapsulate the theme of quarantine, alluding to the pangolin—a creature identified as a potential initial carrier of the virus. The title Pangolin serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of life and the unforeseen disruptions caused by the global crisis.
Accompanying Juncosa's poems, do Espírito Santo created 40 watercolors, each corresponding to a poem. While the connection between the text and the visuals may not always be direct, the paintings evoke a sense of an inner journey. The watercolors feature floating images set against a white backdrop, with abstract and geometric elements reminiscent of delicate oriental miniatures. Together, these works invite readers to explore the emotional landscape of isolation and reflection during an unprecedented time, presented in both English and Spanish.
