The King of the Golden River (Illustrated) cover

This captivating tale explores themes of greed and redemption as the brothers face the consequences of their actions in The King of the Golden River (Illustrated).

In The King of the Golden River (Illustrated), the story unfolds in the enchanting Treasure Valley, nestled high in the mountains of Stiria. This picturesque landscape, however, is overshadowed by the greed and folly of its owners, the two elder 'Black Brothers', Hans and Schwartz. Their mistreatment of the Southwest Wind, an elemental spirit, leads to dire consequences as the valley is flooded, transforming it into a barren wasteland of red sand. Stripped of their farming livelihood, the brothers turn to goldsmithing, but their greed knows no bounds.

Things take a turn when Hans and Schwartz cruelly melt their younger brother Gluck's cherished heirloom, a golden mug. This act of betrayal inadvertently summons the King of the Golden River, who emerges as a finely dressed golden dwarf. In a twist of fate, the king presents a tempting proposition to the brothers. If someone can ascend to the source of the Golden River and pour three drops of 'holy water' into it, that person will be rewarded with a river of gold. However, this must be done on the first attempt, or they risk being consumed by the river and turned into a black stone.

As the brothers grapple with their choices, themes of greed, redemption, and the consequences of one's actions come to the forefront. The King of the Golden River (Illustrated) serves as a cautionary tale, reminding readers of the delicate balance between wealth and morality, and the importance of kindness and humility in the face of temptation.
