Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis.
»A significant contribution to the literature of music in and from Istanbul, which will show readers from different disciplines, social, and musical contexts the four important musical cornerstones of this landscape.« Hande Saglam, Anthropos, 114 (2019) »Der Band ist [...] lesenswert und weckt vor allem Interesse an mehr Forschung, die, wie in den besten Texten dieses Buches, soziale, städtebauliche, sozial und religiöse Hintergründe Istanbuler Musiklandschaften mit einer Analyse der Musikszenen verbindet.« Martin Greve, Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde des Morgenlandes, 109 (2019) » Unbedingt lesenswert!« Sebastian Gietl, Bayerisches Jahrbuch für Volkskunde, 07.10.2019 Besprochen in: Volkskunde, 1 (2018), Liselotte Sels https://stephenjones.blog, 16.04.2022
