On the basis of previously unknown sources, including letters from Sigmund Freud, "Freud in Hebrew" traces the path of psychoanalysis from German-speaking countries to pre-state Israel. The focus of the study is the question of the acceptance and influence of psychoanalysis in a context characterized by Jewish immigration, national tensions, British colonial rule and the formation of the Jewish state. The psychoanalyst and historian Eran Rolnik describes how psychoanalysis penetrated the discourses of education, literature, medicine and politics at the beginning of the 20th century and eventually became a therapeutic discipline of the young Jewish community. By examining psychoanalysis in a broad context, the book also sees itself as a contribution to its historicization.
