Maximilianus

Emperor Maximilian I. put his faith in the power of images in his " Gedechtnus" projects, in which he wanted to keep himself and his dynasty in eternal memory. He commissioned the leading German artists of his time to illustrate his autobiographical and genealogical books, as well as the monumental woodcut works of the Triumphal Procession and the Gate of Honor. They surpassed anything that had been created in printmaking up to that time.

The exhibition catalog and its contributions by renowned scholars highlight the active role of the imperial commissioner and with it his direct influence on the content and design of these works.
