Religion Revealed cover

This book is written for a generation curious about religion, largely ignorant of what it actually is and confused by signals about it in the modern world. The argument is, therefore, self-explanatory throughout. The first half explains the historic and worldwide phenomenon of religion in its major manifestations. It also discusses problems with religion. The second part focusses on Christianity, showing how it can be professed with intellectual integrity and to personal and social benefit. Whilst the author is critical of some forms of contemporary Christianity, he draws throughout on the Bible and Christian tradition in its reconstruction. Care is given in defining modernity and explaining how Christianity engages with some of life’s central concerns and responsibilities. In this the book shows how the Christian understanding of how to live responsibly and to the full remains as vibrant and relevant as it has ever been.

«The author of ‘The Pastoral Nature of Theology ’and ‘The Ethics of Uncertainty’ has written his most thought-provoking book yet. It is a radical revisiting of the Christian drama and an important contribution to the ʻNew Atheistsʼ debate. John Elford will disturb, stimulate and fascinate in this work which brings together his thought.» (The Very Revʼd. Dr Ian Markham, Dean and President Virginia Theological Seminary.)
«This is the theology of a distinguished academic leader, a country vicar and pioneer of urban regeneration, as crafted by the probing questions of generations of young people.» (Professor Simon Lee, Emeritus Professor of Jurisprudence, Queen’s University, Belfast.)
« [...] an important contribution to the place and plausibility of religion in the modern world.» (John Saxbee, Church Times, 25 April 2014)
«The book moves seamlessly from critical examination to positive affirmation with regard to Christianity and Modernity. It shows how the Christian understanding of life can be lived responsibly and meaningfully. It is rich with a detailed presentation of different philosophies, religious teachings, and historical facts along with theology. Elford’s effort to contribute in a productive union between Christianity and modernity needs to be acclaimed by philosophers and theologians of the present time in an era that seems to harbinger the terminal decline for religion in general, and for the Christian faith specifically.» (Romero D’Souza, Theological Book Review 26.1, 2014)
