This book presents a Kautilyan non-Western eclectic theory of International Relations, exploring its relevance and potential impact on both Indian and Global IR.
In Kautilya and Non-Western IR Theory, the author embarks on an exploratory journey that seeks to establish a Kautilyan non-Western eclectic theory of International Relations (IR). This theory aims to moderately assimilate various research traditions rooted in Eurocentric IR while introducing innovative features that could enhance both Indian and Global IR. Central to this exploration is the ancient Indian text of Kautilya’s Arthaśāstra, which offers a unique perspective on contemporary IR.
Despite its potential, Kautilya’s Arthaśāstra has often been hindered by the issue of 'presentism.' This phenomenon occurs when modern assumptions from dominant theoretical models, such as Classical Realism and Neorealism, are retroactively imposed on the text. Such readings can obscure the alternative assumptions and unconventional traits that Arthaśāstra holds. This book endeavors to liberate Kautilya’s work from the constraints of presentism, facilitating a more genuine engagement with its insights.
By juxtaposing the elements of continuity and change throughout the historical context of both Kautilya’s Arthaśāstra and Eurocentric IR, the author highlights the relevance and applicability of Kautilyan thought in today's world. Ultimately, Kautilya and Non-Western IR Theory presents a compelling case for integrating non-Western perspectives into the broader discourse of IR, promoting a more inclusive understanding that could benefit scholars and practitioners alike.
“In her attempt to analyse Kautilya’s Arthasastra, Shahi has demonstrated great academic objectivity and distinction and has made a valuable contribution to reordering the mental bookshelf of international scholarship on IR.” (Punsara Amarasinghe, International Affairs, Vol. 96 (4), 2020)
