Sandy Kealty descended on the Dimbola At Homes exotically dressed, and a wonderful reciter of her pin sharp, comic and wise poetic diatribes of contemporary life. She is the poetic equivalent of a great cartoonist, eschewing jargon and pomposity, always with a funny but wise punch line, and particularly gifted at setting out a verbal picture that lingers in the mind long after the poem has ended. Yes, she is very taken with runner beans and dust, with clothes and memories and the joys and pitfalls of retirement. And in full control of rhyme and meter. But in print, the poems reveal great depth, indeed The Mermaid is Unimpressed revealed beside elements of fantasy and legend a personal history and a vein of melancholy and sadness. Sandy promised that her next collection would deal with caution, and motorbikes, and hip-hop, and now here it is.
