No quilter can resist a stack of beautifully co-ordinated fabrics all neatly folded into a bundle and tied with a bow. As more fabric stores specialise in combining and marketing their own custom bundles of fat quarters, it leaves many quilters with just a ‘taste’ of many fabrics in the form of these 18 x 22’’ cuts (called fat quarters) but not really enough to make an entire quilt out of. Emma, a former fabric shop owner in Australia herself, inspires quilters to create one of her 12 quilts specifically designed to showcase these fabulous cuts whether they are from a single fabric collection or a complementary combination of many fabric lines. Emma’s patterns cross over beautifully between the modern and the new traditional quilt maker alike.

You fell for the fabric and bought the bundle and it’s sitting on the shelf. Occasionally you dream about what to make, you take it down and smile at the colours and patterns, you even fondle the bundle, and then put it back on the shelf. Untie it and unleash it with this fabulous book. Create 12 quilts with pre-cuts. I don’t have 12 pre-cuts – should I buy more? These fat-quarter friendly projects will help you de-stash, or send you running to the quilt shop for more. The book explains what a fat quarter is, and then gets straight into the projects. The photography is breath-taking. The contemporary designs will speak volumes to the modern woman and quilt artist. The ideas are mainly geometric and colourful. Some of them could even be mix and match taking a row from several designs. I love Nellie Gray for its mix of white, grey and yellow. Star Burst is out of this world. All the designs are very handsome and desirable. You get block size and quilt size; materials, cutting and assembling with photos and diagrams and at least two photos of the finished quilt. At the back of the book, there’s how to finish everything off and templates. Recommended.

A brilliant book that inspires you to use the collections of fat quarters you have. Emma's use of design is beautiful. The designs are clean and bright and inspiring. I love her use of colours and prints. I love the fact that she can use busy prints but by using calm and bright colours she makes a quilt that stands out. I think the book is designed for quilters that are used to following patterns to create amazing designs. The designs use everything from basic squares to more complicated shapes. This means that each quilter will find a quilt to produce at their level. I think the book would be fantastic to expand your skills. You could work your way through the book and expand your skills as you go. There are clear instructions with pictures and diagrams to support you. I can honestly say there isn't a quilt within the book that I wouldn't like to make. I love Emma's bundle of tips at the back of the book. They are so useful and easy to digest. It's brilliant when crafters pass on their hints and tips as it makes life so much easier for us newbies. There are 12 different projects packed into this book. Each of them uses different fabric with different designs and different uses of shapes in the quilts.
You will be amazed how different fat quarters and shapes can create some amazing designs.
