Where Are We Now David Bowie? cover

In Where Are We Now David Bowie? Richard Purden makes a personal pilgrimage through the artist s life, speaking along the way with musicians, photographers, family, friends, lovers, muses, fans, and more. Some have never shared their experiences in full before, and others have passed away since doing these interviews. A lifelong fan, Purden combines his role as a music and travel writer to explore the places, people, and culture of Bowie s creative life and inner world. His is an ambitious journey that takes in numerous countries, concerts, interviews, exhibitions, and events, from tea and biscuits with Mick Rock in London to a visit to the Moss Garden and temple in Japan. He also travels Switzerland, where he finds the former home and inspirations of the Thin White Duke, and to the Chateau d Herouville, the French mansion where Bowie recorded Low and Pin-Ups. Purden recalls epic teenage journeys to see Bowie across land and sea in the mid-90s and early 2000s, taking a deep dive into albums that deserve further inspection. He speaks to luminaries including Morrissey, Van Morrison, and Roger Daltrey, and then, after a life-changing visit to the Sotheby s auction in 2016 and seeing the Lazarus musical, discusses Bowie with actor Michael C. Hall and artists including Peter Howson. Elsewhere, he examines the struggle between two Davids -- one appearing to undermine the other -- and looks at how, after nearly ten years of keeping a low profile, Bowie returned for one final creative flourish. Since his death, a new post-Bowie world has emerged, with different stories and fresh narratives celebrating his life in a multitude of new ways. Where Are We Now David Bowie? takes in all of this and more.
