"You are mistress of High Stoke now, Mistress Jerrard ... "

After escaping her Dorset village, Alice is building a new life with husband Henry Jerrard at his beautiful but impoverished home, High Stoke. But behind the crumbling facade, someone is playing a deadly game.

When a maidservant is murdered and an innocent man is named, the crime reveals a web of lies. Alice can trust no one - not the witnesses, not sinister steward Isabel, and certainly not the coroner Sir Malcolm, who seems more interested in pursuing an old gambling feud than the facts behind the case.

How can Alice uncover the truth when every wrong turn means risking more innocent lives?

There are secrets in Alice's new home. This is a game of high stakes that she must not lose ...

The vivid second historical mystery for 17th century investigator Alice Jerrard
