In 1940, Britain was engaged in a desperate struggle against the relentless assaults from the Luftwaffe. The demand for new aircraft was immense, and British manufacturers were unable to keep up with the huge orders placed by the British Government. To meet the need, they turned to American manufacturers like Curtiss and North American Aviation. Proposing a new state-of the-art aircraft, North American introduced one of the greatest fighters of the Second World War: the P-51 Mustang. It could fly and fight with Allies bombers all the way to Berlin and back. Its range was so extensive that it began to replace Spitfires towards the end of the war. By 1944, the Allies had achieved air superiority over Western Europe, due in no small part to the exceptional capabilities of the Mustang.
Using rare archival footage from IWM's unique collection, this flip book recreates the impressive manoeuvres of the North American P-51 Mustang.
