Stories of injustice, feuding, chicanery and natural disasters told through the words of Lincolnshire people in the Middle Ages. When the normal channels for righting wrongs or asking favours were unavailable, the people of medieval England petitioned their kings - in parliament, council, or chancery. Lincolnshire's inhabitants took full advantage of these opportunities, and their stories are told now through their petitions drawn from The National Archives, edited here. Throughout the county, over three centuries, Lincolnshire's petitioners sought redress for their wrongs or requested special favours. Petitions were presented by all sections of society: men and women, aristocrats, peasants, merchants, townsmen, bishops, abbots, and other clergy. Their stories illuminate political turmoil, religious and economic change, and the influence of geography. They also show vividly how Lincolnshire's experience was part of the national, and even international, story. The introduction to this volume sets the documents within England's administrative, legal, political, economic and social framework, and is followed by the texts of almost 200 petitions. These were selected from a much greater possible number for their interest and variety; and each is enhanced by extensive notes
This edition is warmly welcomed, both for its most helpful introduction and for the provision of such vital source material. For anyone interested in Lincolnshire, or indeed England, in this period, this material offers a fascinating glimpse, wonderfully explained and edited, on what was actually going on, in terms of the concerns of local people as well as the machinery of government and providing justice. * MIDLAND HISTORY *
This fascinating book sheds light on ordinary and extraordinary life in medieval Lincolnshire. * The Local Historian *
Another excellent volume from the Lincoln Record Society [...] The editors are to be congratulated on a huge amount of work covering such a wide period and so many different fields of study and often obscure sources - and yet put together in a readable way. * The Ricardian *
This is undoubtedly an important volume, both for the history of the general relations between Crown and subjects, as well as for local and regional history. * English Historical Review *
Many of the members of the Lincoln Record Society will be primarily interested in the local historical significance of the documents. Based on the introductions and comments one will be thoroughly satisfied with this volume. * Historischen Zeitschrift *
This collection adds considerable detail and variety to our understanding of the social, economic, and political contexts in which these petitioners, and their communities, lived. -- COMITATUS
