Walk! the Lake District South cover

The Lake District is to leisure walking what Vienna is to the waltz, Venice to canalization, Bletchley to code-breaking, Chicago to the blues, and Dublin to the brewing of porter. None of these places invented the related pursuit, but in each the activity was honed to a fine art. With superb lakes carved into spectacularly sculpted valleys, long rugged ridges blessed with imposing panoramas, jagged crags dangling from grand peaks, sweeping dales cradling remote hamlets, and barren fells tonsured with arcane henges and ancient ruins, the Lake District has everything the dedicated wilderness seeker could desire. All 37 walking routes include: walking route summary, ratings for Effort Time Distance Ascents/Descents Refreshments and Vertigo risk, fully detailed walk description including frequent timings to aid navigation and check your progress, GPS waypoints at every key point on every route, full colour 1:40,000 scale Ordnance Survey licenced mapping for each route, short walk and stroll alternatives Synopsis Including GPS Waypoint lists and a Place Name Index, this 160-page colour book contains walking routes within the Lake District South region. Wire-O spiral binding allows it to lay flat and be folded back on itself without damage. It features: route summary of exertion rating; refreshments rating; time, distance, ascents/descents; and more.

New Perspective on an Old Friend, 10 Jan 2006 The Lake District is such well known walking country that it must be difficult to find something new to write about it. Charles Davis has accomplished this in confident style, covering the southern Lake District from Wast Water in the west to Haweswater in the east. His selection of classic high level summit ascents and ridge walks is well chosen and includes some old friends of mine - the best of south Lake District high level fell walking. But he also has an eye for walks over quieter, lower fells and through Lakeland's beautiful wooded valleys such as Dunnerdale. In rushing to the high summits I have often neglected these, I suspect like many others, and this guide will be an indispensable companion for future exploration. I am impressed with the new Discovery Walking Guides series, brightly presented in a modern style and including innovations such as colour printing and photography (some excellent photographs in this book), new Right to Roam OS mapping and GPS navigation information. They are easy to use on the fells, fitting conveniently into a rucksack or trouser pocket or map case. Bo Reda - Wales Walk! The Lake District South - something new at last, 23 Jan 2006 I have a shelf full of Lake District books but so many of them seem to have the same old routes, desribed in uninspiring terms, that I don't feel the urge to use them. Walk! The Lake District South is fresh, and although it covers some old favourites, there are plenty of new ideas for routes.I love the style of the author - he informs yet entertains at the same time. You just want to get out there! I have done 3 routes so far and intend to do the lot. The maps are adapted from OS so are good and clear, overlaid with GPS tracks and waypoints - most reassuring. I would heartily recommend this book to all lovers of the Lake District.
