This collection of essays from the International Journal of Psychoanalysis explores the vital interplay between literature and psychoanalysis, enhancing our understanding of both fields.
This book presents a collection of essays from the International Journal of Psychoanalysis that delve into the intersections of literary experience and psychoanalytic processes. It offers readers a substantial contribution that reflects the core concerns of contemporary psychoanalysis. The essays demonstrate how literature and psychoanalysis can enrich each other, providing insights that are both profound and relevant in today's context.
Since Freud first used the Oedipus narrative to illustrate his theories, the relationship between psychoanalysis and literature has been both fruitful and complex. While the fields have evolved and expanded significantly, the connection between them remains essential. The essays included in Key Papers in Literature and Psychoanalysis highlight this dynamic, illustrating how both disciplines can engage in a meaningful dialogue that enhances our understanding of human experience.
The selected essays explore how literary and psychoanalytic experiences activate our ability to 'see feelingly,' fostering a deeper connection to truth. Together, they enhance consciousness and provoke thought, expanding our emotional landscape while challenging unconscious barriers. This interplay between literature and psychoanalysis not only enriches our understanding of each field but also underscores their shared relevance in exploring the intricacies of the human psyche.
'This series brings together the most important psychoanalytic papers in IJP's 80 year history, in a series of accessible monographs. The idea behind the series is to approach the IJP's intellectual resource from a variety of perspectives in order to highlight important domains of psychoanalytic inquiry. It is hoped that these volumes will be of interest to psychoanalysts, students of the discipline and, in particular, to those who work and write from an interdisciplinary standpoint. The ways in which the papers in the monographs are grouped will vary: for example, a number of "themed" monographs will take as their subject important psychoanalytic topics, while others will stress interdisciplinary links (between neuroscience, anthropology, literature, philosophy, etc., and psychoanalysis). Still others will contain review essays on, for example, film and psychoanalysis. The aim of all the monographs is to provide the reader with a substantive contribution of the highest quality that reflects the principal concerns of contemporary psychoanalysis and those with whom they are in dialogue.'- From the Series Editors' Preface
